Inverter electrolytic capacitor In the high-frequency range of impedance frequency characteristics, the inductive reactance of electrolytic capacitors becomes prominent. As for the parasitic inductance of electrolytic capacitors, many manufacturers do not provide this parameter. However, in practical applications, the parasitic inductance of electrolytic capacitors used in inverters can directly affect the performance of the inverter. For example, if two electrolytic capacitors are connected in series and each has a parasitic inductance of 200 nH, then when the current changes at a rate of 500 A/μs, an induced voltage of 100 V will be generated on the DC bus, thereby increasing switching losses and electromagnetic interference in the inverter. Filtering and smoothing capacitors are used to smooth the voltage and current outputs of rectifiers. When the voltage is below 450 V, inexpensive aluminum electrolytic capacitors are typically employed. When the voltage is between 500 V and 700 V, aluminum electrolytic capacitors can still be used in series. However, when high reliability is required and the voltage exceeds 1000 V or even higher, film capacitors should be used as filtering capacitors.
Generally speaking, conventional film capacitors used for smoothing applications are nothing special. However, in IGBT inverters and variable-frequency drives, since the IGBT operates in a relatively high-speed hard-switching mode, if the DC bus exhibits significant parasitic inductance, the IGBT may be turned off prematurely. When a high induced voltage is present, not only does this increase the turn-off losses of the IGBT, but an excessively high induced voltage can even cause the IGBT to break down. Moreover, if the ESR of the filtering capacitor is relatively high, the switching ripple current generated by the IGBT inverter or VFD will induce additional losses in the ESR of the filtering capacitor, leading to overheating and shortening the capacitor's service life. By using film-based electrolytic capacitors as filtering capacitors in variable-frequency drives, we can eliminate the need for periodic replacement of aluminum electrolytic capacitors.
