From January to March, the total sales of the world’s top ten semiconductor equipment companies increased by 4% to reach US$23.4 billion, with Applied Materials (U.S.) ranking first.
China’s research institute CINNO Research recently released its ranking of global semiconductor equipment sales for the first quarter of 2022 (January-March). The combined sales of the top ten companies totaled US$23.4 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.4% but a 9.4% decrease from the previous quarter.
The chart shows the top ten companies. By country, there are five Japanese companies, three U.S. companies, and two Dutch companies. The value of each company is unknown, but according to... According to CINNO data, these 10 companies all achieved sales exceeding 500 million U.S. dollars during the same period, while the top four companies each recorded sales exceeding 3.9 billion U.S. dollars.

The leader is the U.S. company Applied Materials. The company covers nearly the entire semiconductor process, including thin-film deposition. CVD, PVD, ion implantation, etching, high-speed thermal processing, chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP), metrology, and inspection equipment. Quarterly sales increased by 13% year-on-year but declined by 1% compared to the previous quarter.
Ranking second is Tokyo Electron Co., Ltd. ( TEL), the company offers a diversified product portfolio that includes coating machines/developers and dry etching systems. Sales increased by 14.2% year-on-year but decreased by 2.9% year-on-year.
Third place goes to the United States, which has an advantage in etching equipment. Lam Research reported sales that increased 5.5% year-on-year but declined 3.9% month-on-month.
Fourth place goes to the Netherlands. ASML. The company is the world’s largest manufacturer of lithography equipment and the only supplier globally providing EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography equipment for advanced processes at 7 nm and above. For a long time, the company held the second position in the semiconductor equipment market; however, its ranking has declined, and its sales for the same period fell by 25.2% year-on-year and by 34.6% month-on-month.
Recently, in order to deliver products to customers quickly, the company has often skipped some of the final equipment inspections that would normally be conducted at its own factory, shipping the products out instead. Revenue cannot be recognized until the evaluations are completed on-site at the customer’s location—this is the primary reason for the decline in sales.
In fifth place is the U.S.-based... KLA, a leading supplier of semiconductor inspection equipment, saw its sales increase by 31.2% year-on-year, but declined by 3.2% month-on-month.
Following closely behind is the Japanese company. SCREEN, Hitachi High technology 、 Advantest and DISCO, along with the Dutch company ASM International, rank tenth.
